Off-grid writing retreat

Above the Strandline is a writing retreat on Isle Martin, a community-owned island off the north-west coast of Scotland. Here you will have the chance to leave mainland life behind and concentrate on writing for a few precious days. The amenities are simple, the island beautiful, the welcome warm. The weekend will feature a mix of tutored workshops and free writing time. You will also have the option of a short 1-to-1 mentoring session. There is no electricity, so leave your laptops and tablets behind and bring pens, paper and a sense of adventure. There is no hot running water so bring a flannel for a wash-down. We will however, have the luxury of flushing toilets, a warming fire and delicious meals cooked on the island using local produce. The workshops are suitable for new writers as well as those with more experience.

Friday 14 - Sunday 16 September 2018

What's Included

The retreat will be located in the Mill House with simple dormitory style accommodation. Beds will be made up for your arrival and linen is included. All meals are included, as are tea and coffee. If you enjoy a glass or two of an evening, you are welcome to bring your own bottle. Meals will be prepared on the island using local and organic produce where possible. As the island is run by volunteers, there may be a few light chores to share. The return ferry crossing and all workshops are also included in the price of your writing retreat.

What to Bring

September is generally a pleasant month in the Highlands, but the weather is changeable at any time of year. Bring waterproofs, warm clothing, a full change of clothes, towels, wellies or walking boots, a head torch, a flannel and a hot water bottle. Bring swimwear if you fancy a dip in the sea. Don't forget writing pads and pens. Midge nets are available but bring your own repellent if you use it. You would make Em, who deals with Isle Martin candle management, very happy if you brought some light to share in the form of a candle.
